On May 5, 2026, deputies with the Johnson County Sheriffโ€™s Office responded to rural Leeton, Missouri, in reference to a reported shooting incident.

According to court records, deputies learned that Joseph Allen Rains had allegedly fired a handgun at the victim following a physical altercation. Investigators were advised that the victim had been struck in the back of the head with an object described as a brick during the confrontation.

After the parties were separated, Rains retrieved a handgun from the ground near the area where the altercation occurred. Rains allegedly pointed the handgun toward the victim and fired several rounds in the victimโ€™s direction. Investigators also learned that two juveniles were inside nearby residences and within the area where rounds were fired.

An investigator later reviewed surveillance video from a witnessโ€™s security camera system. According to the affidavit, the footage showed a white SUV arriving behind the victimโ€™s vehicle while the victim was inside. The video allegedly showed Rains striking the victim in the back of the head with an object before the two became involved in a physical struggle on the ground. After being separated, Rains recovers a handgun from the ground, then fires several rounds toward the victim and the nearby residences where the juveniles were located. Rains is now charged with assault in the first degree, armed criminal action, unlawful possession of a firearm, two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, and two counts of unlawful use of a weapon.
