On Aug. 20, 2026, a deputy from the Boone County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to a residence in Boone County regarding a reported assault with a weapon. Dispatch advised that the caller was calling on behalf of a friend who was scared for her life. The call notes stated that a gun had been fired inside the residence and children were present.
A deputy made phone contact with the victim, who stated she and Clinton M. McClain became involved in an argument about money at approximately 7:45 to 8:15 a.m. The victim stated she was seated on a toilet in the bathroom when McClain entered and pointed a black pistol at her. McClain allegedly told the victim to transfer all the money into his account, or he would kill her. The victim stated she feared for her life and believed McClain was going to kill her if she did not transfer the money. The victim stated she hesitated for a moment, and McClain fired the pistol in her direction. The bullet struck the shower wall immediately next to the toilet where the victim was seated.
The victim reported that her grandchildren were inside the residence when McClain discharged the firearm. She stated their bedrooms were immediately next to the bathroom where the firearm was discharged. The victim described the firearm as a black pistol with fading or wear on the barrel that caused portions of the barrel to appear silver. She stated she believed the firearm was a 9mm pistol.
During a consent search of the residence, deputies observed a bullet hole in the shower wall that they reported was consistent with the victim's statement. Deputies also located a black Taurus G2C 9mm handgun matching the description provided by the victim. The Taurus G2C was located inside a Lexus, which the victim stated McClain had driven to a nearby gas station after leaving the residence shortly after the incident.
McClain is now charged with domestic assault in the first degree, armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon by discharging a firearm into a home, and endangering the welfare of a child in the first degree.
