On May 25, 2026, officers with the Sedalia Police Department responded to Bothwell Regional Health Center in reference to a domestic assault report.

Officers arrived at the hospital and made contact with the victim. The victim stated that between approximately 3:20 a.m. and 3:39 a.m., an altercation occurred between her and her boyfriend, Christopher D. Hatfield. The victim said she had been texting her uncle when Hatfield questioned who she was messaging. The victim told Hatfield she was looking at a song, which reportedly upset him.

According to the victim, Hatfield attempted to take her phone. During the struggle over the phone, Hatfield wrapped his arms around the victimโ€™s neck and choked her. The victim stated that after she woke up, she went to the hospital because she was experiencing pain from the incident. She reported being extremely frightened during the assault and screamed for her roommate.

The victim provided screenshots of messages allegedly sent by Hatfield to one of her friends. In the messages, Hatfield reportedly stated that he and the victim โ€œhad a fight late last nightโ€ and admitted he tried to grab the phone from her, leaving bruises in the process. Hatfield reportedly stated he was not trying to leave bruises and was only attempting to get the phone from her hands, but she wanted to โ€œstruggleโ€ with him.

Officers later went to a residence in the 400 block of North Prospect Avenue to contact Hatfield. Hatfield told officers he woke up and saw the victim texting someone on her phone. He stated he asked who she was texting and believed she lied to him. Hatfield said he demanded to see the phone, and when the victim became defensive, he attempted to take it from her. Hatfield admitted that during the struggle, he had his arm around the victim while trying to take the phone and stated he accidentally choked her. He said the struggle lasted about 10 seconds and later attempted to deny choking the victim.

According to the report, Hatfieldโ€™s criminal history includes a felony conviction for first-degree property damage, a misdemeanor conviction for domestic battery, and a local ordinance charge for endangering the welfare of a child. Hatfield is now charged with domestic assault in the second degree.
