On June 24, 2026, federal agents with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), deputies with the Pettis County Sheriff's Office, and detectives with the Mid-Missouri Drug Task Force responded to the 4200 block of West Main in Sedalia in reference to serving an active arrest warrant.
The subject was identified as Lazaro Joaquin-Ruiz, who was wanted by the Pettis County Sheriff's Office on an active warrant for Possession of a Controlled Substance with a $7,500 bond. A red Ford Explorer registered to Joaquin-Ruiz was parked in front of the residence.
Officers initially attempted to make contact at the trailer, without success. While contacting another individual nearby, a citizen advised officers that a man had run into a shed beside the trailer as law enforcement arrived. Officers returned to the property and attempted contact at both the shed and the trailer. After receiving no response, a deputy observed Joaquin-Ruiz through a window inside the shed, holding the door shut.
Officers made repeated announcements before opening the shed door. Joaquin-Ruiz was standing just inside, holding a knife in a manner officers believed indicated he was prepared to use it. After repeated commands, he dropped the knife. Officers attempted to take him into custody, but he actively resisted arrest. A Taser was deployed before Joaquin-Ruiz was successfully restrained.
A search of the area immediately inside the shed where Joaquin-Ruiz had been standing revealed a glass smoking pipe with a white residue and a torn plastic bag containing residue. A field test conducted returned a positive result for methamphetamine. A subsequent search of the shed located a second glass pipe with residue and another cut plastic bag containing residue.
Investigators also determined Joaquin-Ruiz was the subject of an active Full Order of Protection involving Alondra Reyes-Hernandez. According to the report, Joaquin-Ruiz was prohibited from being at the property and had recently been convicted of violating the order of protection.
Based on the recovery of suspected methamphetamine and Joaquin-Ruiz's connection to the residence, investigators obtained a search warrant. Officers announced their presence in both English and Spanish before breaching the front door after receiving no response. A drone was deployed inside the residence, but no occupants were located because several interior doors were closed.
After additional announcements, officers entered the residence and located Alondra Reyes-Hernandez and three children in a rear bedroom. Investigators reported Reyes-Hernandez acknowledged hearing law enforcement's commands but did not explain why she failed to exit the residence. Officers stated the children were placed at risk by remaining inside during the execution of the search warrant.
A search of the bedroom resulted in the discovery of a small bag containing a crystal substance on an end table next to the bed. The substance field-tested positive for methamphetamine. Investigators reported the suspected methamphetamine was within reach of the children. A wallet located on the bed near the suspected methamphetamine contained identification belonging to Reyes-Hernandez. The report also noted that the methamphetamine was wrapped in toilet paper, which investigators identified as an ingestion method commonly used by women to protect their teeth from eroding.
Joaquin-Ruiz is now charged with possession of a controlled substance, resisting/interfering with an arrest for a felony, and violation of a protection order.
Reyes-Hernandez is now charged with possession of a controlled substance and endangering the welfare of a child involving drugs in the first degree.
