On June 16 and June 18, 2026, officers with the Sedalia Police Department responded to two separate reports involving alleged indecent exposure by John Paul Nevels.

On June 16, officers responded to the 400 block of E. 7th St. in reference to an indecent exposure call. According to the probable cause statement, the victim reported she was asleep when she was awakened by aggressive knocking at her front door. When she answered the door, she observed John Nevels standing on her porch wearing only boxer shorts. The report states Nevels intentionally exposed his genitals to her.

The victim provided officers with security camera footage showing Nevels walking toward her residence wearing only boxer shorts. Although the camera did not capture the front porch, she identified Nevels as her neighbor who lived across the street. She completed a written statement and requested criminal prosecution.

Officers responded to Nevels' residence and made contact with him. According to the report, he displayed signs of intoxication and admitted to consuming alcohol. Nevels denied leaving his apartment that evening, even after officers advised him they had video footage showing him walking toward the victim's residence. He was arrested and transported to the Pettis County Jail, where he was booked and placed on a 24-hour hold.

On June 18, officers responded to Lamyโ€™s in Sedalia after receiving a report that a man was exposing himself in a parking lot. The suspect was described as a white male in his 70s wearing a blue shirt and overalls. Officers identified the suspect as John Paul Nevels, who told them someone had seen him urinating.

According to witness statements, Nevels had been asked to leave the building after harassing businesses inside. After going to the west parking lot, witnesses said he spoke with a female postal courier and kissed her hand. After the courier left, witnesses reported Nevels pulled his genitals from his pants while standing in the middle of the parking lot.

The incident was captured on video by witnesses, who provided officers with a copy of the recording. Based on the investigation, officers arrested Nevels on suspicion of sexual misconduct. The probable cause statement also notes that Nevels is on probation for arson and has a prior arrest for enticement of a child.

Nevels is now charged with harassment in the second degree and sexual misconduct in the first degree for the June 16 incident. Nevels is also charged with sexual misconduct in the first degree for the June 18 incident. On June 23, Nevels pleaded guilty to sexual misconduct in the first degree for the June 18 incident and was sentenced to five days in jail and court costs.

The June 18 incident is listed under John D Nevels, but the warrant is for John Paul Nevels. Mugshot is pending.
