On May 11, 2026, deputies with the Saline County Sheriff's Office were in the area of 240 Highway and Silver Avenue when a deputy observed a dark-colored Chevrolet traveling eastbound on 240 Highway at a speed significantly above the posted 55 mph limit. Radar indicated the vehicle was traveling 79 mph. A traffic stop was initiated, and the driver and sole occupant was identified as Justin Syder Ross.

During the stop, Ross advised that he had recently purchased the vehicle and did not yet have insurance. He provided a Missouri certificate of title and a handwritten bill of sale. Investigators noted discrepancies in the documents, including conflicting seller information, differing sale prices, and a sale date listed as May 23, 2026, which was 12 days beyond the date of the stop.

A records check revealed Ross had a valid Missouri driverโ€™s license and was on probation for prior controlled substance and burglary offenses. Deputies reported Ross became increasingly nervous when questioned about the vehicle paperwork and repeatedly asked to be released. After being advised of his Miranda rights, Ross allegedly gave conflicting statements about when he took possession of the vehicle and its ownership history.

While speaking with Ross, deputies reported detecting the odor of alcohol and observing bloodshot, watery eyes, and slurred speech. Ross admitted to drinking earlier in the day. A portable breath test reportedly indicated a blood alcohol concentration of .175. Deputies then advised Ross that he was under arrest for driving while intoxicated, speeding, and forgery.

During an inventory search of the vehicle before towing, deputies located a partially consumed bottle of McCormick Vodka on the driver's side floorboard.

While being transported, Ross complained about the fit of his handcuffs and became argumentative with deputies. Investigators stated Ross later unbuckled his seatbelt, prompting the deputy to pull over to the shoulder in the area of 240 Highway and Ladder Drive. Deputies reported Ross resisted efforts to restrain him, ignored commands to stop, and attempted to open the door to exit the patrol vehicle. As Ross exited the vehicle, a Taser was deployed, striking Ross in the back. The deployment was unsuccessful because the darts were too close together. ย

According to the report, Ross then fled on foot into a wooded area nearby. Deputies pursued him into the woods, where Ross allegedly fell down a hillside after attempting to cross a wire fence. Deputies reported Ross resisted commands to remain on the ground and continued resisting while awaiting backup officers. Ross reportedly told deputies to shoot and kill him several times. A Taser drive stun was reportedly used during the struggle. Officers from the Marshall Police Department later arrived to assist in securing Ross and returning him to the roadway.

Ross was transported to Fitzgibbon Hospital for medical clearance following the Taser deployment. Deputies stated Ross remained belligerent with hospital staff.

Investigators later reviewed patrol vehicle camera footage and reported Ross had repeatedly attempted to slip his handcuffs and remove his seatbelt during transport. The investigation was documented through body-worn and in-car camera systems, and the recordings were placed into evidence.

Ross is now charged with forgery, attempted escape from custody while under arrest for a felony, resisting arrest for a felony, DWI, exceeding the speed limit (20-25 Mph), failure to register a motor vehicle,ย  and operating a motor vehicle without insurance. Case Information:
